Committee on Women

The Committee works for the empowerment of women and their increased participation at all levels of the development process in the Arab region.

The Committee on Women was established in accordance with resolution 240 (XXII) of 17 April 2003, which was endorsed by the Economic and Social Council in its resolution 2003/9 of 18 July 2004. Recognizing the importance of women’s empowerment and of their increased participation at all levels in the development process, the Committee on Women monitors developments with regard to the status of women, and evaluates indicators with a view to formulating integrated policy advice for their empowerment. The Committee is also tasked with identifying women-related priorities in the programmes of work of ESCWA and its member States; following up on global and regional conferences and coordinating regional efforts to implement ensuing resolutions and recommendations; and preparing and implementing projects for the advancement of women in ESCWA member States.
