The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is an international measure of overlapping deprivations in multiple dimensions of wellbeing, complementing traditional monetary poverty measures. The present paper takes stock of how MPIs are currently utilized in the process of designing, adopting and evaluating social protection strategies across developing countries worldwide and in the Arab region specifically, and puts forth selected recommendations as to why, to what extent and how MPI methodology should be embraced in the Arab region, particularly in the area of social programme targeting.
