The issue of energy security has come to the fore in many countries amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, which have created new development challenges for the global South. Disruptions in energy supplies are hitting hard the most vulnerable populations.
Many developing countries and countries with economies in transition are facing common challenges to problems created by the pandemic. Their experience in confronting these challenges while ensuring that progress towards sustainability and climate goals remain on track can be valuable for many countries and serve as good examples of South-South cooperation.
This side event, co-organized by the Economic Commission for Europe, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and ESCWA, is part of the Global South-South Development Expo 2022 Advancing South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable COVID-19 Recovery. The event provides an opportunity for Governments, international organizations and academics to consider the role that South-South economic cooperation can play in sustainable energy transition.
