Water pollution and biodiversity loss affect sustainable water resource management and water security. As surface and groundwater resources become increasingly polluted, water availability in the region is reduced.

Within the framework of the Mashreq Waters Knowledge Series, ESCWA and the World Bank organized on 9 and 10 July a workshop on protecting water quality and biodiversity for improved water management. The workshop aimed to identify challenges and opportunities to overcome water pollution and freshwater biodiversity loss for the sustainable management of water resources in the region.

The meeting was attended by technical experts and representatives from ministries and agencies responsible for water resources management, water services and the environment, as well as experts from the World Bank, UN entities and international organizations.
