Tracking food security in the Arab region

April 2022

The suite of documents (22 country profiles) applies the food security monitoring framework detailed in the publication “Tracking Food Security in the Arab Region,” developed by ESCWA in collaboration with member States, AOAD, and FAO and supported by Sida. Each of the 22 Arab country profiles provides an overview of the monitoring framework, a background on the concerned country as related to its natural resources, socioeconomic contexts, and agriculture and food security. Then, the profiles present food security data and trends, provide the country's food security snapshot including major its drivers and determinants, and action areas, and finally examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in its early stages. Each country profile – there are 22 profiles one for each Arab country – applies a food security monitoring framework developed by ESCWA in collaboration with member countries, AOAD and FAO and supported by Sida to describe the food security situation in the particular country.

Each profile provides an overview of the monitoring framework, which is comprised of 24 indicators distributed into 3 core food security indicators (undernourishment, food insecurity experience, and adult obesity) and 21 causal factors along the four main food security dimensions, availability, access, utilization, and stability. Then the profile provides a short background overview of the concerned country as related to its natural resources, socioeconomic contexts, and agriculture and food security. The profile presents the food security data and trends along the 24 indicators comprising the framework. It then provides the food security snapshot of the country including its major drivers and determinants before overviewing key action areas. Finally, the profile examines the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in its early stages as well as the actions taken by the Governments to mitigate its impact on food security.
