Technical booklet: Solar dryers

February 2022

ESCWA has developed this technical booklet on solar dryers through the United Nations’ Development Account project on “Enhancing resilience and sustainability of agriculture in the Arab region”, which aims at strengthening the national capacities to address the resilience and sustainability of the agricultural sector in the region, targeting three Arab countries, namely Jordan, Lebanon and the State of Palestine.

Solar dryers represent a green and affordable food drying technology that relies on renewable energy and allows the production of high-quality dried products, thus reducing the energy bill on users and contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and food loss and waste.

In addition to this technical booklet, ESCWA has prepared training materials on solar dryers, which were delivered during national training workshops carried out in the three target countries of the project; and the “Training Manual on Drying Fruits and Vegetables Using Solar Dryers” that can be used in agricultural extension or other training workshops on this technology. ESCWA has also developed four similar technical booklets on other green agricultural technologies: green fertilizers, rainwater harvesting, small-scale food processing, and food bio-conservation.
