The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) has partnered with the World Summit Awards (WSA) to implement an award that recognizes efforts to develop digital Arabic content for sustainable development in the Arab region.  The first cycle of ESCWA DAC Award was launched in 2021 during the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development (AFSD2021) and was concluded during AFSD 2022 with the announcement of winner products in two categories - Institutions and Young Entrepreneurs.

About the Award:

  • Delivered annually.
  • Targets institutions and young entrepreneurs from all Arab countries.
  • Highlights the benefits of digital technologies for advancing sustainable development.
  • Promotes the creation of quality content related to the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Award process was open to institutions and young entrepreneurs from Arab countries who have created digital Arabic content products that have a clear impact on society.  Institutions can be public or private, academic or non-governmental; and young entrepreneurs can be from formal startups, teams of young people, or individuals younger than 35 years.

The rules and conditions for participation were set by a joint ESCWA-WSA steering committee, and a jury of experts have evaluated the submissions and selected the winner products for the Award in its first cycle.

The Award process included a webinar and open call for submissions through the WSA applications database, which was open from 17 June to 30 September 2021.  To facilitate the preparation of submissions, the application forms were made available in English and Arabic for both categories.
